Punishments
The slaves got punished a lot in the book Underground to Canada. They got punished for running away, resisting slavery, not working hard enough, talking too much or using their native language, stealing from his/her master, murdering a white man, When the slaves were punished, they would be punished in a violent way. It had to physically hurt them. The slaves were punished by being abused; getting whipped, being put in chains, being put in shackles, and being hung and left to die, being branded, forcibly submerged under water, put up for sale, kicked, tied up, tarred and feathered, being forced to walk a treadmill, put in the slave box, chased by dogs, hit by paddles, and/or had a party of their body cut off; this was considered a death sentence. The only way slaves could avoid severe punishment was for them to do what they were told to do, when they were told to do it.
